I know that if you are planning on going to Vermont college there is information about letters of recommendation on the web site. WARNING it says you only need 2 letters on the web site, but the application says 3.

The Master of Arts Program offers students the opportunity to develop a program of individualized study, under the guidance and supervision of faculty advisors. Students undertake rigorous, independent study and internships, which culminate in a master's thesis or creative project. The program does not follow conventional patterns of university instruction and demands responsibility and discipline.
The Master of Arts Program makes significant use of the writing process as a way of communicating ideas, creating new perspectives, pondering questions, and sharing all of this with faculty, students and other scholars in the field. In your evaluation of this person, please reflect specifically on his/her abilities in this crucial area.
We would ask that in your evaluation, you consider the following attributes where appropriate:
ability to form concepts based on experience
ability to work independently
ability to organize
ability to carry out plans or projects
professional integrity
personal integrity
Please note the nature and duration of your relationship with the applicant and comment on the qualities that would allow him/her to participate successfully in our program.
