Perpetual Learner- The adventure of going back to school

It pays to do the FAFSA

As I said my husband and I have both compeleted our FASFA and received our financial aid packets. Hubby was surprised to find he recieved almost 1000 in grants for his undergrad studies. That is a grant, not to be paid back. That is very cool.

My packet had no grants. I guess they don't make those for graduate study. But i could get everything I needed in loans. In fact I can get more than what I need in government loans. I just don't want to be saddled with all of that. I plan on taking just what I need for this first semester and then for each coming semester trying to put money away to pay for it. I hate to have 50,000 in debt when I leave graduate school. It must be nice to have parents who pay for school. So here is a run down.Should anyone be looking and interested.

tuition 7502
technology fee 82
room charge 255 double ( another 200 for a single) wow that is high.
board charge 305.00
total 8144.00 double room
total 8244.00 double room

This is the cost for one semester

In subsidized student loans, ones that you don't begin to collect interest before graduation, the award is only 4250. That leaves a balance of $3994.00 is left to pay for this semester not including books, flight, cab etc. As I said the government gave me enough to pay for the rest in unsubsidized loans if needed.

Made my reservations_ I guess that means I'm going

Made the plunge and got my airline flight. Not the easiest thing to do from Houston. As I understand it you can come in early but you can not leave a day late. And knowing you have to stay a portion of that last day really plays havoc with those people who have to fly a long distance. There are very few good flights leaving in the afternoon. Of course you can get anything, if you pay for it. so $323.90 is the cheapest flight. Plus the taxi cab ride. I expect without sharing a cab ride each way will be around 80.00. I can only hope.

A study?

They tell you to be thinking about your overall plan, and come to Graduate residency with something in mind but not be "sold" on one direction. I think I am pretty sure that the first 6 months will focus on digital technology as it compares to the traditional art studio. That way I can use the research that I am doing on graphics, new technology that we are researching for the books and use that for my study as well. Stretching that further I think I might want to explore the influence of technology and the psychology and emotional affects on the traditional artist.

So many papers came in the mail.

Wading through all of the paper work that is coming through from Vermont. Can we say overload? Sure, just go through each piece check it off and do what is necessary, plus write down questions.

A few words popped out at me, and the great deal of paper work prompted questions.

sub-freezing temperatures- Glad I'm starting in the summer, I have no idea what to expect in February. Sure I grew up in Buffalo, but that was years ago. I'm in Texas and have been here for a very long time. Can I walk through snow? do I actually have to purchase boots to get around in Vermont and if so where does one buy those in Texas? Ceratinly cow boy boots would not do, and who wants boots on your feet the entire time?

Queer friendly? I thought the word Queer was not a good word? And a college is using it?

I need a flashlight? hmmmm

Yes, I will be flying. Anyone else coming in at the same time so that I might share a ride?

Meals.... wonder if it is better than the food at Vermont College. How do I request vegan, with no soy? Hope that is possible. I will miss my morning fresh carrot, beat apple juice.

I must get a calling card. Cell phone service in Vermont is the pits. Glad to hear each room has a phone.

back to doing a bit of laundry in the dorm.

Wondering can you get wi fi in your room? Found this out called they said, "yes!"

I can't stand the low humidity in Vermont. Anyone willing to let me store a humidifier at their home for the year, that I can then use at residency. Can I purchase one and leave it there? This is a huge delema for me.

I'm in!

That is what they tell me, after much deliberation. I also received the College handbook addendum for the MFAIA, it was to clarify "course credit equivalence" that I think is necessary for my transcripts. Now that I am in I wonder if it is really waht I want? Do I want to do this for the next 2 and 1/2 years? I spoke with Manuel at finacial aid briefly. The cost of a semester 8,144. The amount I'm awarded $5,800 in unsubsidesed loans, and $12, 000 in subsidised loans. This definitely takes care of all of the fees for a year, but I hate taking out usubsidised loans. They begin to charge interest from the moment you take them out. You can make payments on the interest. I know this is an investment in an education... but....

I have little time to decide as it starts in just a few weeks.

Clafirication on the application?

I received a call this morning from the College. They wanted clarification on my application and as I understand it they want to know why I would continue to study sculpture in an MFAIA when it is apparent that I have pretty much mastered that. Well tell that to the colleges that I applied for teaching positions at. One college said, "We can see you are a master sculptor but do you have masters degree?" And so I know that I have to have at least 18 hours in the areas that I want to teach at. So here is what I sent for clarification.

What do I mean by 18 hours of study in three different discipline?
Coming from Vermont College I am very familiar with the type of study and narrative evaluations that are given at the end of each semester. Before applying to Goddard College, I contacted Phillip Robertson and told him that as I reflected on my future, and taking into consideration that I might like to teach at the college level, I am aware that my transcripts will need to indicate that I have a minimum of 18 hours of study in the areas that I want to teach. Philip suggested that along with the narrative evaluations Goddard could offer “course equivalence” to satisfy those requirements. The three areas that I might like to teach in are 1. Studio art-sculpting 2. Graphic arts 3. Writing. Therefore, to plan for my future and the evaluation of my transcripts by different universities that might hire me, I want to be sure that the appropriate amount of hours and the direction of my studies are reflected in a “course equivalence” as well as narrative transcripts. I do hope this answers questions one.

How do I see my growth as a creative person in the MFAIA program?
In my undergraduate work at Vermont College, I did quite a bit of sculpting and worked with empathy. It was at the very end of my study at Vermont College that I had some major breakthroughs concerning emotion in art, sculpting, and transferring emotion through posthumous sculpture. I would certainly like to leave myself open for anything new that might come up with that, as research on empathy is a growing area. Sculpting will most certainly be a part of my study at Goddard since I will need to satisfy “course equivalent time” as mentioned in the answer to question one. There is still opportunity for education and growth in the area of sculpting as I am beginning to incorporate newer technologies into the sculpture studio. However, there is so much more that I want to do at Goddard.

If you were to look at my creative life from the outside it would look extremely scattered, but somehow all the creative things that I am doing are very interconnected. For example, sculpting digitally in the computer is a huge undertaking and very different than traditional sculpting. The study and documentation of this for Goddard and for the book that my husband and I are writing for Focal Press, “Digital Sculpting with Mudbox Essential Tools and Techniques for Artists” will occupy some of my time at Goddard. It is my goal to bridge the gap between digital and traditional sculpture. This is the time to do that because there are some marvelous advancements that are happening in this field. Along with writing the book, I will be writing regular articles on these new advances and how they pertain to the traditional sculptor. This research and writing will also be a part of my study.

As mentioned in my application, I’m also interested in trying to advance my illustration skills, though again, this will be done using digital art, an entirely new process for me. While learning these techniques I will be illustrating a few of the children’s books that I am working on.

The above should satisfy my desire to obtain the appropriate number of hours or “course equivalence” of study enabling me to teach the disciplines of computer graphics and studio art at a college level. The final aspect is my writing. I truly want to step out a bit further with my writing. It is true I am a published writer, but I am beginning to venture into new areas, writing for more high profile magazines as well as taking the steps to satisfy my desire to write memoir and work on more books for children. Therefore, I would like my study to reflect this as well and in turn satisfy my third criteria of “course equivalence” for writing.

If all of the above creative endeavors are not enough —the list continues. Besides writing, art, and graphics I am also producing video and audio. Typically I am creating 3 podcasts a month and have set a personal goal to create 12 videos a year. The podcasts and the videos, as well as the things I write about, are things that I am curious or passionate about. For example, this month I had to read books on alternative treatments for children with ADHD for queries that I have submitted to major magazines. Meanwhile, I read a book on grief for a podcast along with a book on cutting for a future podcast. I am also reviewing two computer programs for inclusion in the Mudbox book, and may review these programs for major major magazines. I have no doubt that once I review the programs and learn them, I will most likely create videos to show others how to use them. I am extremely passionate about sharing knowledge and do so in many ways—writing, podcasts and video.

My podcasts and videos educate, but they also help to promote either my fine art http://www.creativesculpture.com or my God’s Word Collectible gift line http://www.godsword.net . I do hope you can see the many creative outlets I have in my life and the many different ways these are all connected. It may be a challenge defining my study at Goddard, but I’m up for that challenge. Each area, learning digital sculpting and other graphics tools, podcasting, video, and finally pushing past my own self imposed limits as a writer will be a challenge, but I’m open for that challenge and the learning process that will go along with it. Thanks once again to Goddard for honoring the entire creative self and giving me the opportunity to push my study further through graduate school.

Please let me know if you have any further questions.

Everything is in- but....

I finally got through to Goddard. Everything is in and the application is under review. I guess that takes about 4 weeks. Now that my part is done I find constant doubts about going back to school floating in and out of my thoughts. If money were no problem I'd go in a heart beat... maybe. But you know in this economy I keep thinking about that 50,000 price tag. O.k. not quite that but with books, and travel etc. it will be close, as I mentioned in a previous post. I also think is MFAIA the best way to go? Do I cut myself off from doing a PHD by doing an MFAIA? But that is what I would need to teach, but do I want to teach? DO you see what my brain is doing?

Now I think about my study, is it good enough? Is it what I should be doing? How can I do my study and work? I know I will be able to combine them but is that a good thing? I think it probably is because this "work" is pretty much new stuff, different stuff.

But I ramble. The next step wait for that letter and then talk to financial aid. Lets look at that Financial aid packet. PS still paying on undergraduate loans I think it is about 8,000. We plan on continuing to pay for them instead of deferring them.

Tapping my fingers and waiting

I have left two messages with the school, asking if all of the letters have come through. I would love to cross this off of my list. No answer as of yet. I hear it will then take 4 weeks for approval. My haste? Getting financial aid! Or at least knowing what will be in my budget. I am so very busy, trying to get the book written, writing articles reviewing books for articles and podcast, etc. I sure hope all of this works into my study seamlessly. Back to the grind while I wait.

Recommendation letter-

It was difficult for me to get these recommendation letters, I had three advisers at Vermont College but one passed away and another is ill. Joyce Mandeville, fromt he TW Wood gallery sent a letter. She is the curator from the gallery that received the Dick Hathaway sculpture that I created as part of my study at Vermont College.

I had spent quite a few hours in Victor Ehly's office- the Dean at Vermont College. Mostly concerning getting the Dick Hathaway sculpture approved, and also concerning marketing of the school. I really think these programs are so incredible the word must get out there. So Victor and I did have somewhat of an academic relationship. He has sent a letter today.

Grouping for what I needed, I went to the person who wrote me a letter from my undergraduate work. He reminded me he did that when I asked him for the graduate letter. I had forgotten to be perfectly honest. And so Father Bill of St. Alban's church was also asked. He is very familiar with my work and me as a person. I have been pretty active in the church over the years. I am part of the worship team, and have taught Sunday school. As well as helped with marketing from time to time.

I had also asked Susan Sawyer, my only instructor if she would send a letter. I don't know about that one. She is my only academic adviser. I only need three letters. I'm not sure if what I have is sufficient.

That is the update on my letters. I am anxious to have everything in, mostly because I want to talk with Financial aid and see just how much out of pocket expenses I will have. My FAFSA has been filled out and so a finacial aid packet is what I seek.
